10 Video Games That Made Boring Things TERRIFYING
2. Dead Space 2 - Surgery
Real surgery isn't fun. It's hours of painstaking work progressing at a snail's pace as a surgeon performs the task with the knowledge a single mistake can be a huge setback. There's no joking around, just the tedious job at hand and a patient fast asleep.
Dead Space 2 uses the gorier aspects of surgery to superb effect, acknowledging the helplessness of the patient to turn a usually monotonous task in a blood-curdling ordeal. There are plenty of moments early in the game to show this, including a patient that was undergoing surgery being found by Isaac with their chest still open strapped to a table.
They end up being ripped apart by a monster while defenseless soon after his arrival, but the real heartstopping moment comes at the tail end of the story where players must perform the grueling task themselves.
Isaac must strap himself in and guide a gigantic spike right into his cornea, and the shivers down your spine during this experience are unforgettable. Make a wrong move and the entire machine suddenly jumps right into his head and viciously kills him. Do it correctly, and the pin-point slowly enters his eyeball then slides back out in one hell of a painful-looking motion.
It's rightly regarded as one of the tensest moments of the last generation, and it came completely out of nowhere.
