3. Condemned: Criminal Origins - Investigating A Department Store

Condemned had you going through many urban landscapes with limited light, but they often lent themselves to horror with the various crazed drug addicts and insane homeless people that pounced on you from the dark.

Quite early in the game, after establishing some plot you get asked to go scope out a serial killer's potential lair in a long-abandoned shop.

Department stores aren't usually rife with possibilities to produce frights. They are bright, commercialized zones designed to beckon in customers to spend their hard-earned cash. Even in Condemned, the store is covered in Christmas decorations with no sign there's anyone inhabiting it.

This is all a bluff, as Bart's Department Store ends up being one of the scariest parts of the game. The various mannequins leftover from modeling clothing that are scattered throughout all begin to appear in places they weren't before and stalk the player ominously.

Not only do they chillingly move when you aren't looking, but the few enemies in the level will pose as them before springing to life and battering you unawares.

This makes you second guess everything you are doing, and the terror constantly builds with these human dummies blocking all your exits. Eventually, dozens crowd around you in a suffocating situation and you are left panicking with no way to escape them.

It makes the mundane task of having to scope out an abandoned store a psychologically scarring experience.
