When a franchise makes the move to space, it feels like it's yelling how creatively bankrupt it has become. When Friday the 13th was out of ideas, the series went to space. The same thing happened with Hellraiser and Leprechaun.

Although this stereotype has been a recurring gag for years, Activision didn't seem worried when they decided to take the Call of Duty series off-world. Not only that, the trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare proudly demonstrated how this instalment would centre around a war through the cosmos.

Now, it's not like COD didn't have futuristic elements before. Because the previous instalment, Black Ops III took place in 2065, players had already experienced sci-fi in the series.

But when Infinite Warfare introduced laser-shooting robots in space, it seemed like the franchise had lost its way. This change of direction was so reviled, the game's teaser became the second-most hated video on YouTube at the time.

Learning their lesson, Activision went back to their roots for the follow-ups, focusing on more grounded storylines. However, they could have avoided this error in the first place by simply asking, "Which franchise improved once they made the jump to space?"
