10 Video Games That Made You Say "WTF Were They THINKING?!"
Cop-outs and dumb twists galore.
Because the gaming market has always been crammed with content, even the best RPGs, platformers, and FPSs struggle to stand out. As such, developers are eager to think outside the box to ensure their products get a leg up against the competition.
Turning Super Mario into a racer sounded stupid on paper, but Nintendo have been laughing all the way to the bank ever since Mario Kart took off. Pokemon GO! sounded silly and yet, it made billions within days. Many thought Metal Gear Solid 2 would fail after our hero, Solid Snake, was given a backseat. Instead, it became one of the most celebrated games ever.
As such, we should give video games a chance when they go in a bold and daring direction. These ideas may not work, but at least they tried to break the formula.
Having said that, there are times where you can't wrap your head around what the development team were trying to accomplish. When a game throws in a pointless twist, shameful product placement, or highly inappropriate content, you can't begin to think what the creators were trying to do. Here are the ten video games that made you say, "WTF were they thinking?"
10. "The Nurse Scene" - The Adventures Of Willy Beamish
The Adventures of Willy Beamish is graphic adventure game, where our titular star gets up to all sorts of wacky hijinks. Because of the simplistic set-up and cartoony aesthetic, it's obvious this title is aimed at children.
However, there are a couple of moments that are weirdly inappropriate. Firstly, Willy has a frog called Horny. It may be juvenile, but it's hard not to giggle when our protagonist yells his pet's name out of context.
Also, you can tell some of the dialogue was deliberately written with double-entendres. When you hear characters tell Willy that "You can play with yourself," you know the line was written like that intentionally.
However, The Adventures of Willy Beamish is best-known for the nurse scene. There's no easy to say this - the nurse's chest is astoundingly large, to the point where it's distracting. When you see the way her breasts jiggle and contort in different directions every time she moves, you wonder how this kids game got released without issue.
Now, sexualising women is nothing new in gaming. Just look at Duke Nukem, Tomb Raider, and Soul Calibur. But The Adventures of Willy Beamish is (supposedly) geared for kids. As such, it makes you wonder why nobody thought twice about designing this character so provactively.
