10 Video Games That Made You Say "WTF Were They THINKING?!"

9. The Nightmare Of Faceless Toads - Paper Mario: The Origami King

final fantasy 7 crisis core
Intelligent Systems

Although the Paper Mario spin-off is known for being overly cutesy (even by Mario standards), every instalment has at least one disturbing moment, which jars with the light tone. The spider-monster from Super Paper Mario freaked out players. The townsfolk who've been turned into pigs in The Thousand-Year Door left us spooked.

And in Paper Mario: Origami King, it’s the Toads in The Temple of Shrooms who give us the heebie-jeebies. While the block-breaking plumber explores this tomb, he'll discover a group of Toads, who have lost their possessions.

What have they lost? Their faces!! Also, every time you locate one of these disfigured Toads, they trail behind you, while you remain in this dungeon. When you see Mario being followed by an entire army of deformed mushroom people, it feels you're trapped in a living nightmare.

Somehow, things get more surreal. After locating all 40 Toads, they will open a sealed door, allowing you to face the boss.

How do they open the door? By performing a disco dance. After watching Mario having a boogie with dozens of faceless fungi, you can't help thinking, "What did I just watch?"
