10 Video Games That Mocked Their Rivals
2. Uncharted's Next-Gen Filter
The Uncharted series quickly became known for its set pieces and exotic locales, usually sprayed across the screens in bright hues reflecting the landscape around protagonist Nathan Drake - jungles, mountains, snow, bustling towns. All were rendered in realistic colour and shades.
Naughty Dog realized how different their games were from many others on the market in that gaming generation and had no problem pointing it out. One of the features available to buy with in-game currency is the 'Next Gen' filter.
While this sounds fancy, what it does is actually turn the vibrant colours of the game to a palette of browns. Just browns.
This was Naughty Dog's naughty mockery of games like Gears of War, Red Faction Guerrilla, Killzone and Fallout 3, as they all featured backdrops and object models of dull, bland browns and greys that almost blend into one another.
The fact that Naughty Dog made the player spend some of their hard-earned in-game cash to turn on what was in essence a dulling-down of the game is the capper on this joke.
