Hideo Kojima might be the gaming industry's greatest troll, given how thoroughly he has toyed with player expectations in practically every single modern Metal Gear Solid game.

This reached its nutty apex in Metal Gear Solid V, however, because after players defeated the "final" boss, Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, the game's true ending was held out of reach while they worked through a series of additional busy-work missions and tasks, with the unlock conditions proving frustratingly vague.

And even when you complete the game's truly final story mission, Kojima drops the mind-melting bombshell that you've actually spent the entire game playing as an imposter Big Boss, a reveal that left many fans positively fuming.

Worse still, several major plot threads were left hanging due to Konami rushing the game out the door, including an absent third act which would've seen Snake battle Eli (aka young Liquid Snake) on a remote island, and presumably made the piecemeal story feel a little more complete.

Players who forged ahead to achieve the game's true ending were therefore "rewarded" with an outrageously left-field twist that scarcely made sense and undermined the player's entire experience. If that isn't showing contempt for fans, what is?
