10 Video Games That Must Be Played On The Hardest Difficulty

3. Fallout: New Vegas - Hardcore Mode

The Last Of Us
Bethesda

If you thought surviving Fallout: New Vegas’ wasteland was too easy, then Hardcore is the mode for you, providing a realism which even The Last Of Us is unable to compete with.

Along with having to keep a close eye on your health meter, you’ll have to make sure that your protagonist is not deprived of sleep, is not dehydrated and is not starving to death, a common concern among people living on the streets.

With penalties to your strength, endurance, agility and intelligence, as well as the fatality of death from the Grim Reaper, these three additional meters would seem enough. Well, they’re not.

To make things even harder, ammunition has weight, making resource management mandatory and mindless looting an addiction of the past. More notably, Stimpaks are no longer super-drugs that heal instantly like magic. They only gradually increase your health over time, crippled limbs can only be healed via a Doctor’s bag and Stimpacks cannot miraculously heal loved companions like tears save deceased main characters at the end of Disney flicks.

Hardcore mode mirrors reality in discomposing ways, and it is the only way to truly experience the only apocalyptic New Vegas in which Chandler from Friends is not funny.
