Yes, the Marble Zone was intimidating and the Labyrinth Zone was ultimately rewarding, but can you really top the Green Hill Zone?

Even Sega have gone back to the drawing board time and time again, porting a version of this level's aesthetic into every 3D Sonic game, and even Sega All-Stars Racing.

It was the subject of many fan-made projects too, its simplistic aesthetic essentially being just as much a part of what we think of when imagining Sonic, as the blue blur himself.

Oh, and then there's the Green Hill theme, which besides backing the level itself in one of the most effective ways in gaming, is so well known it's often mistaken for the Sonic's main theme itself:
