10 Video Games That Punish You For Being Curious

5. Dark Souls - Some Treasure Chests Will Obliterate You

In gaming, a chest almost always means a cash reward, a new suspiciously-useful item, or a delightful bushel of figs. That is, with the exception of Dark Souls.

Dark Souls seems to revel in its killing of players (though, I suspect, not as much as certain masochist players do). There are no shortage of ways to be slaughtered in the series, so naturally, players are always on high alert.

However, much like the Resident Evil save room music stirs a Pavlovian response inside telling you "now... relax!", seeing a treasure chest always drops your guard, and you inevitably scuttle towards your payday like a kid towards an ice cream van.

So, you pry it open, and instead of a hookshot or five grand, you get... dead. You get dead. It's not a chest, but a monster - a Mimic - and it loves curious, greedy little players who last saved the game forty minutes ago.
