10 Video Games That Punish You For Caring
9. DmC: Devil May Cry
When Capcom decided to reboot their beloved Devil May Cry series, they also chose to hand the reigns over to western developer Ninja Theory. It seemed like a good move at the time, as Ninja Theory had brought us well-received action games like Heavenly Sword and beloved cult classics like Enslaved: Odyssey To The West. There was no reason to think they wouldn't knock it out of the park - but, depending on whom you ask, they did. Still, while DmC was a very well crafted action game, it was also something of a middle finger (pictured) to series devotees.
Dante was an established and popular protagonist after four games, with his bleach-white mop of hair, red coat, and signature weapons. He was heavily inspired by anime - the aloof, silver-haired badass with a big sword - a style Capcom is famous for.
However, Ninja Theory made it a mission to "subvert" this overall tone. Dante now looked like Morrissey and provoked fans by briefly donning a white wig before mocking his appearance and casting it off.
From there onward the story gradually became a satire of American politics and media, turning DmC's major lore into more of an undercurrent supporting the game's messaging, souring many established fans and newcomers alike.
