10 Video Games That Released At The WORST Possible Time
9. Metro 2033
Released in March 2013, you would imagine that THQ thought they had a safe window to release their post-apocalyptic Russia-based game.
Regardless of what they thought, they were undoubtedly wrong, with a sequel coming out for numerous major titles that very month.
Assassin’s Creed 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Just Cause 2 are awesome games in their own right, but when you put them in a trio and face them against the small-time Metro, you’re in for a problem.
In fairness, only one of the three competitors are first-person shooters, of which, Metro has a more unique narrative edge. However, you still have to account for genuine selling power of a brand and those three had plenty to offer.
In the end, though, it’s not like this release window killed Metro, as the slight murmur it got on release was enough to warrant further success. Two sequels, two next-gen remasters, continued chatter throughout the decade and a perception that its tone and atmosphere were enough to place it well above average.
