10 Video Games That RUINED Amazing Villains
3. Vaas Montenegro - Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is the point at which the FPS franchise pivoted into card-carrying AAA blockbuster territory, in large part because Ubisoft decided to market each new game on the strength of its larger-than-life mascot-like antagonist.
In the third game this was charismatic pirate lord Vaas Montenegro, who was the focus of Far Cry 3's trailers above everything else, while the game's production team compared him to Darth Vader.
And in fairness, what we got of Vaas was pretty damn great for the most part - he was a dynamic, entertaining antagonist with an intriguing backstory as brilliantly performed by Michael Mando.
It's just a shame, then, that Vaas actually doesn't have much screen time throughout the game at all, amounting to about 20 minutes' worth of cutscenes.
Worse still, he's killed a mere two-thirds of the way through the game in a crushingly underwhelming encounter that culminates in control being wrestled away from the player in the pivotal moment. The overarching villain who takes his place, Hoyt Volker, can't hold a damn candle to him.
Seemingly realising they'd whiffed the opportunity to make the most of Vaas, Ubisoft resurrected him for one of Far Cry 6's DLC episodes which ultimately implies he could still be alive.
