Another series of games that would become an unforgettable film franchise are the Half-Life games. Half-Life was originally released on PC in 1998, followed by Half-Life 2 that was released on multiple platforms in 2004. This first-person shooting game elevated the genre by setting the bloodshed against a beautifully realistic backdrop. The story of Half-Life follows Dr. Gordon Freeman who opens a portal between Earth and a dimension called Xen when an experiment goes wrong. Freeman must fight against Xen creatures (including the parasitic headcrab) as well as government personnel who attempt to cover-up of the catastrophe. This shooter had an amazing plot and script that successfully imbued a science nerd with the power to fight off aliens with a crowbar. Who needs superheros when you have researchers?
