And finally, we come to the legendary RPG which popularised the very idea of New Game Plus, and perhaps remains the ultimate expression of its potential brilliance.

Chrono Trigger contains a stonking thirteen endings of varying complexity, and are unlocked depending on choices made throughout the game and especially how the player reaches the game's final boss, Lavos.

After beating the game once - and most likely being stomped by Lavos - you'll unlock New Game Plus, where you'll be able to restart the game with your levels and equipment carrying over to take another pop at the alien parasite.

The real kicker, though? This time, you can fight Lavos whenever you want, allowing you to unlock each of the additional endings and see all the distinct possible permutations of the story - namely, how the timeline is affected by defeating Lavos at different junctures.

Beating the game once and moving on is denying yourself the joy of hoovering up all the different endings - some genuinely great, some totally jokey.

Chrono Trigger pioneered the very idea of repeat playthroughs being integral to the fabric of the story, rather than simply something for the most obsessive fans to do.
