10 Video Games That Tried To Be The Next Big Thing (And Failed)
9. Mighty No. 9
Mighty No. 9 was a title created by Mega Man's Keiji Inafune. The game was crowdfunded through Kickstarter, yet received numerous release date delays and had a troubled production.
While the title is the spiritual successor to the Mega Man series through its character designs and art direction, Mighty No. 9 just didn't have the quality to match its predecessor.
Gameplay had a lot of issues, from poor level design leading to cheap deaths, as well as infuriating boss fights. While games like this have been challenging, they were designed to be fair so that players won't feel cheated. The title's graphics were also a detriment, and made navigating through a level more difficult than it was supposed to be.
Despite the pedigree and the backing behind it, Mighty No. 9 remains one of the industry's biggest failures. What seemed to be the spiritual successor to one of gaming's beloved franchises ended up looking like a bad fan game.
To paraphrase one of its infamous pieces of marketing, it made gamers cry like an anime fan on prom night.
