10 Video Games That Tried To Be The Next Big Thing (And Failed)

Brink was an online multiplayer shooter with the right ideas... at the wrong time. It was developed by Splash Damage and received mixed reviews despite being touted as the next big thing in the FPS genre. While the game did have some concepts ahead of its time, its execution proved to be disappointing.

For one, Brink featured a parkour system which was rare to find in online shooters of that era. But unlike Mirror's Edge which revolutionized the mechanic, the game's parkour was stiff due to the canned animations that limited the player's freedom.

From a gameplay perspective, the title also suffered from a lack of polish. With several weapons and customization options, you'd expect to have some variety in Brink but instead, every gun just felt the same. This, along with the poorly implemented parkour system, dragged down Brink which is why it has been forgotten over time.

It's a shame, too, as the game did offer new ideas that can be seen in recent games. The parkour mechanic was incorporated in Call of Duty and Titanfall with much better results while story-based multiplayer shooters would find their audience with games like Destiny.
