6. The Order: 1886
Although it wasn’t quite a launch title (it came out about a year after Sony’s eighth generation console), The Order: 1886 was nonetheless seen by many consumers as a great showpiece for what the PS4 could do.
Indeed, Ready at Dawn’s action-adventure offering was an excellent way to demonstrate the system’s visual heft in several respects, as well as its ability to provide fluid and cinematic third-person gameplay.
Additionally, its setting (19th century London) was thoroughly engrossing, just as its plot (revolving around a radical organization participating in a war between humans, werewolves, and vampires) was pure campy horror joy.
If only it lasted longer and had more to it.
While the linearity/simplicity and abundance of Quick-Time Events certainly diminished the value of the journey, it’s the shockingly brief campaign length – roughly five hours – that truly left patrons feeling played themselves. In fact, it resulted in industry-wide discussions about quality vs. quantity and what constitutes value in an interactive experience.
Meanwhile, The Order: 1886’s initial (February 2015) $60/£50 cost was greatly reduced a month later because so many people complained about shelling out too much cash for it.
