10 Video Games That Were Banned For Seriously Barmy Reasons

6. Counter-Strike Was Banned In Brazil For Featuring A Map That Resembled A Favela

url-20 If you've ever seen a movie set in Brazil, you're probably familiar with the country's favelas - that's to say, the huge, make-shift shanty towns that popularise urban areas, most iconically in and around Rio de Janeiro. And as a result of their depiction in the media, these favelas have emerged as one Brazil's most recognisable features. That's just the truth, whether it's a good thing or a bad thing or whatever. Back when the original Counter-Strike was released in 1999, though, Brazilian officials didn't like that users had developed a map that more than obviously resembled a favela, presumably because they didn't want people to link violence to some of their largest, most populace (and most violent) areas. Counter-Strike was banned as a result of the map's inclusion, because favelas are only for real life shootings, and not for video games.
