10 Video Games That Were Basically One Big Apology

2. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Silent Hill Homecoming, the sixth entry in the Silent Hill franchise, had a very muted reception upon release. Although it was an admirable attempt to reboot the franchise, it just didn't feel like a Silent Hill game, and was more of a throwback to better games.

Step up Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. It went the bold direction of reimagining the first game, which was a fan favourite, albeit set in an alternate universe.

The game asks the player to reveal their deepest fears and desires, which directly influences the gameplay, and even the appearance of some creatures.

With Shattered Memories, gone was the repetitive hack 'n' slash combat, and back to the creeping, existential horror that made the first three Silent Hill games such a landmark in the genre.

This was a marked improvement from earlier titles, which had slowly been eroding the franchise over time with confusing plot threads and bland combat.

Whilst it isn't a classic Silent Hill game, it not only revisited one of the high points in the series, but also to took the franchise in a bold, new direction.
