Brutal Legend
Double Fine

The story of Brutal Legend could be turned into a Peter Jackson trilogy. Firstly, when the game was under the control of Activision, the developers were in a constant struggle to realise their vision, with Activision knocking back idea after idea.

The rumours were that the game felt reminiscent of Guitar Hero in style and tone, and Activision wanted to refrain from compromising the brand integrity of their franchise. Thus the game was butchered into releasing as a third of its initial proposed state.

Said was release had a marketing campaign handled by EA, who marketed it as a combat game with driving elements - completely glossing over the Real Time Strategy that made up the bulk of the experience, resulting in Brutal Legend reviewing poorly and being received very negatively by people expecting something completely different.
