10 Video Games That Won By Destroying EVERYTHING
1. Resident Evil VII
Even though Resident Evil 4 was an absolute triumph, it indicated that Capcom's zombie franchise was starting to favour full-blown action over subtle scares.
This decision became a noticeable trend when RE5 replaced all potential suspense with over-the-top action sequences (and boulder-punching). The survivor horror elements in RE6 were so watered down, it barely resembled Resident Evil. (The fact it was terrible didn't help either.)
To undo the damage, Capcom knew they had to something drastic for Resident Evil VII. Rather than just copying the gameplay of the earlier titles, this entry revised everything from the ground up while still putting the spotlight on slow-building tension and genuine scares.
Characterisation and plot were never Resident Evil's strong suits, but these factors played a huge role in REVII. (It was also nice to see great voice-acting in the series for once.) Rather than having a whole village or city to explore, the game was scaled back to mostly one house, emulating the claustrophobia from the first few games.
The recent remakes were closer at matching the style and structure of the classics, but it was REVII that flawlessly recreated the dread gamers felt playing the original Resident Evil all those years ago.
