10 Video Games That Won By Destroying EVERYTHING
4. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Few games rebuilt themselves as literally as Final Fantasy XIV. Thanks to the performance issues, shoddy layout, atrocious combat, and grind-focused gameplay of this it wasn't a surprise when this broken and unfinished travesty received 48% on MetaCritic.
Due to FFXIV's sorry state, a handful of patches wasn't going to be enough to reverse the damage. A total overhaul was a drastic idea, but Square had little choice, since their reputation was on the line. So, while the director, Naoki Yoshida, remedied issues with FFXIV, his team secretly worked on a new version, which utilised a more powerful engine and renovated the gameplay, narrative, and servers.
FFXIV was shut down nearly three years after its release and replaced with the revamped version, subtitled A Realm Reborn. Virtually every aspect of this do-over was improved, including the party and job system, the interface, and the character progression. With 24 million registered players and profits at an all-time high for Square, FFXIV 2.0 couldn't have turned out better.
With numerous expansions added over the years, including the recent Dawntrail, FF veterans have been having a ball with FFXIV over the last decade. Not bad for a game once deemed unsalvageable.
