First released in 1995, the Suikoden series is one of the most overlooked - but well received - Japanese role playing game series during both PlayStation and PlayStation 2 generations. The Konami developed series is loosely based on the classical Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan, translated in Japanese as Suikoden.

Unlike most Japanese roleplaying games at the time, Suikoden, didn’t use tired plot devices like amnesiac heroes with secret hidden powers, or farm boys that dream of adventure. Instead, the series centered on themes of war, corruption, politics, rebellions, and betrayal, everything a Game of Thrones fan could ask for in a video game.

The Suikoden series was once a very difficult and expensive series to get a hold of, with Suikoden 2, in particular fetching a high price on eBay. Thankfully, Konami has released the first four games on the PlayStation Store to play on the PSP, Vita, and the PlayStation 3.
