10 Video Games With Utterly Pointless Multiplayer Modes You Ignored
7. Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
Assassins Creed has been going strong since the first title came along in 2007, with the first few instalments being single player only. However, with Assassins Creed: Brother came a new component to the products; a multiplayer mode that pitted Templars against each other as they battled for supremacy. The thing is the series have always had a very particular focus on stealth, its been the main gameplay mechanic throughout each entry as you try to assassinate your targets. And while in concept a multiplayer mode allowing groups of would-be assassins to try to take each other sounds great, when implanted it didnt really work out. Firstly its hard to make stealth games exciting and fun if everyone I splaying the same way. Thats why the Splinter Cell series went with a spies versus mercenaries mechanic so that there was some variety in play styles. The mercenaries were powerful and strong while the spies were less powerful but far more sneaky. With everyone essentially playing as spies in Assassins Creed it left the gameplay to become stale and boring. The other thing that put people off though is that the game promotes being dull and not standing out. To ensure that other players dont spot you have to appear to be a non-playable character, forcing you to be as uninteresting as possible. While this can be challenging, it hardly makes for a compelling game that you can play with your friends. Ultimately the multiplayer couldnt capture the thrill and excitement of pulling off assassination as it does in the campaign thanks to the fact you have to hide the majority of the time, and its the main reason most people completely ignored it.
