10 Video Games With Utterly Pointless Multiplayer Modes You Ignored

6. Brutal Legend

Tim Schafer has created some of the world€™s most unique and intriguing games, such as Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Psychonauts and The Secret of Monkey Island. That€™s a pretty distinguished résumé and most people assumed that Brutal Legend would follow that trend; how could a musical adventure game starring Jack Black as a roadie battling demons not be great right? Well it turned out that Brutal Legend was a good game. There was plenty of exciting third-person combat, a healthy dose of humour and a strong narrative to keep fans entertained throughout. One thing that was included though, something we touched on recently, was the inclusion of a very underreported RTS mode; a mode that most people really didn€™t want or enjoy. You can probably guess out of the two main gameplay elements which one they chose to use as the basis for online multiplayer €“ that€™s right, it was the RTS component. Most players would ignore the multiplayer portion of the title just because it was made up entirely of the bit of the product that they least liked. If you were put off by the tower defence elements in the campaign, you were unlikely to continue to want to play it again against others. In the end Brutal Legend shouldn€™t have had a multiplayer at all, but if the developers insisted it should then at least don€™t build it around the worst part of your game. At least then some people might actually play it.
