10 Video Games We Love BECAUSE They're Fun Trash
2. Modern-Era Sonic The Hedgehog (Franchise)
As a grown man with a tattoo of Sonic The Hedgehog on his arm, no entry on this list was as heart-wrenching nor as sobering to write than this one.
Sonic is like that guy you keep seeing getting his life back on track, only to for him to discover cocaine, or Warhammer miniatures.
Whilst it’s undeniable that Sonic Mania is a tour de force without a single major critical panning, the same can’t be said of his “modern era” (or “boost”/“3D”/“Adventure-style”) games, where the only thing consistent between games appears to be a low metacritic score.
From hoverboards and werehogs to OCs and magic storybooks, Sonic seems to be lost in this crazed canon nightmare, where time travel, multiverses and ancient evils are pretty much par for the course.
Yet, I find myself eagerly grabbing each Sonic title with excitement, and enjoying the hodgepodge of clever ideas and wince-worthy nonsense regardless of their overall quality - there’s something admirable about a team that refuses to aim for consistency, with every new game being - for better or worse - different from the last.
