10 Video Games You Weren’t Expecting To Make You Cry

8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

The genius mind of Hideo Kojima simply cannot be predicted; he always has a trick or two up his sleeve to stun, shock and awe fans. Snake Eater, the third instalment in the Metal Gear Solid series, is a great example of this. Rather than continue Solid Snake's story, Kojima instead dives back into the past and creates a James Bond inspired 60s spy thriller - crazy in concept but brilliant in execution. Naked Snake (also known as Big Boss) is an engaging protagonist but it's his relationship with The Boss which really drives the story forward. It builds to an incredible finale where Snake has to battle and defeat his mentor to complete his mission - the whole thing is remarkably emotional. However, the final tearjerker comes during the end scenes of the game where Snake learns that The Boss hadn't betrayed America at all; she was playing an undercover role but had to be killed at the end of the mission to ensure America didn't receive the blame for a nuclear missile strike. With this new information, Snake arrives at The Boss' grave and tearfully salutes her, leaving her signature Patriot weapon behind too. It's a memorable, moving farewell to an underrated character in the Metal Gear Solid universe and if it doesn't stir up the player's emotions, medical assistance is needed, stat.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
