10 Video Games You Weren’t Expecting To Make You Cry

7. Shadow Of The Colossus

Wander's journey through Shadow Of The Colossus is a lonely, isolated one with his only ally being his loyal horse Agro; there are no NPCs to interact with and the only enemies in the game are the hulking, great colossi which Wander must defeat to progress. Still, despite lacking these typical action-adventure elements, Shadow Of The Colossus is an incredibly moving game. It subverts common ideas about gaming and makes the player rethink the game with a brilliant twist right at the end - it's an unforgettable experience. Wander's quest sees him trying to resurrect a girl named Mono by defeating the sixteen Colossi for a disembodied spirit named Dormin, who promises to restore life to Mono upon completion of the task. In fact, by defeating the Colossi, Wander is releasing fragments of Dormin which enter Wander and slowly begin to corrupt him. As the game progresses, Wander's appearance begins to deteriorate as the dark spirit of Dormin consumes him. Seeing the hero of the story become corrupted before the player's eyes is genuinely upsetting, even if the player only really notices the changes late on. Shadow Of The Colossus begins as a fairly stereotypical quest to save a maiden; it grows and evolves to become something much darker, more unique and much more emotionally draining.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
