10 Video Games You Weren’t Expecting To Make You Cry
6. Lost Odyssey
Most RPGs are draining experiences, due to the huge volume of time players are forced to spend with their characters. Lost Odyssey goes above and beyond this simple bond though, creating a world full of history and story to craft something immersive and exciting. Kaim, the star of the show, is an immortal man who has little memory of his past but has lived for over a thousand years. Rather than simply use that as a unique character trait though, Lost Odyssey is built around Kaim's intriguing lifespan. In particular, exploring and discovering Kaim's memories is key to understanding the mysterious man. The game presents these vague, haunting memories as short stories, unlocked by interacting with people throughout the game world. The game's main emotional hook lies in these stories, entitled "A Thousand Years Of Dreams" - they make Lost Odyssey's world feel real and driven by real thoughts and emotions. Surprisingly, given Kaim's role as a soldier, these stories carry pacifist messages, showing the heartbreak and agony of war, rather than glorifying or reveling in it. Very few of Kaim's memories have happy endings and that adds to the tragedy of a man who has had to watch countless people die all around him. Yes, many RPGs deal with death and tragedy but few do it as well as Lost Odyssey. With these incredibly well written short stories, it evokes a ton of thoughts and feelings, sticking with players long after the game is finished.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
