The "Bad Ending" has been a concept teasing at the back of the industry's mind ever since its inception. Sure there were text adventure games that had you die if you made the wrong decision, but one of the first examples of the player screwing up or sitting around twiddling their thumbs meaning the worst possible ending for everyone involved was Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Majora's Mask tells you that in three days, the moon will fall on Clock Town, killing everyone there and, ya know, presumably everyone else because it's the bloody MOON. And the game lets you call its bluff on that one, running out the time until the final few hours when the moon finally comes down on everyone's heads and kills them all.

The most interesting part is how the mood of the townsfolk changes depending on how close to landfall the moon is. You wander around Clock Town, seeing the townsfolk all either go mad from terror at their inevitable doom, find some solace at the end, or remain in denial right up until impact.
