You play through the 2008 Prince of Persia reboot hoping to restore the fertile grounds that will imprison the big bad of the game, Ahriman, and rebuild the seal that keeps him from destroying the earth.

Your partner, Elika discovers she's been given powers by the god opposite Ahriman and is the key to restoring the seal. As you begin to talk with her more, it is strongly suggested that she died before the game started, and was resurrected by the villain at her father's request which caused him to become corrupted.

In fact, during the final fight, she sacrifices herself to seal away Ahriman, since her life gave him a link to the world and thereby strengthened him.

By this point, your character The Prince has realized that he was in love with Elika and could not bear to let her die. He proceeds to cut down the trees that strengthened the seal and releases Ahriman back into the world just to revive her.

You walk away at the end with her in your arms, asking you why you did it, as the world is crumbling to blackness behind you and the villain's darkness begins to corrupt everything once more.

Even the Epilogue DLC didn't have you vanquish Ahriman, only revealing that our main characters got away alive, and he is still on the prowl hunting them down.
