2. Outlast
Outlast finds players in the role of journalist Miles Upshur investigating a psychiatric hospital and becoming embroiled in a horrifying story of cultists and experiments.
After surviving encounters with some of the most grotesque and intimidating inmates video games have to offer, Miles finds himself against the big bad of the game, the Walrider, in an underground science facility.
It manifests as a cloud of nanobots killing everyone in its path and is revealed to be controlled by a poor victim of the scientist's experiments.
Miles then proceeds to kill this host of the Walrider after a struggle, then stumbles to the exit, opens the door, and is instantly slaughtered by a SWAT team who shower him in a hail of bullets.
As Miles lies dying, it is revealed he is the new host of the Walrider and we hear the agonised screams of your murderers being slaughtered as the game fades out.
So the main hero gets possessed and the source of the madness that corrupted all the asylum inhabitants is released into the world to no doubt cause more terror and despair.
For a horror game it works, but it does mean you spent five hours trying to stop evil only to fail at the final hurdle.
