Rogue Legacy is not your ordinary roguelike. Normally, the genre is all about starting over. You choose your character, you enter a dungeon, you try to survive as long as you can, and when you inevitably die, you just rinse and repeat.

Not in Rogue Legacy, however. The game never lets you pick the same character again.

The entire gimmick of Rogue Legacy is that you don't play as a single hero. Instead, you play as an entire lineage of them, meaning that when your character dies, they don't come back, and you play as one of their descendants instead.

Every hero in your family tree has only one life to spare, so getting attached to them is pretty much guaranteed to end with bitter disappointment and an obligatory fit of rage. On the other hand, the randomly generated roster of descendants keeps the game interesting for much longer.

Not to mention, if you manage to reach the ending, you get to see how many descendants it took to get there. Nothing hits harder than knowing you had to sacrifice decades of your bloodline to get where you are.
