10 Video Games Where You Unexpectedly Swap Characters

8. Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne

Red Dead Redemption John Jack
Remedy

The Max Payne series is centered around the awesome, John Woo-inspired revenge crusade of the titular NYPD cop, who blows away the bad guys as stylishly as possible.

But in an attempt to avoid staleness, the second game briefly changed things up at the half-way point by having Max become incapacitated after falling out of a window.

Players are then handed control of Max's femme fatale companion Mona Sax for three levels, playing a sequence of the game which previously occurred off-screen as Mona shoots her way through a construction site filled with goons.

Better still, players have to use their sniping skills to defend a vulnerable Max, after which they're handed back control of the titular hero.

Max Payne 2 is admittedly short enough that it ends long before it can run out of steam, but even so, this was a fun mid-game breather which granted players a neat outside perspective of Max.
