10 Video Games With "That One Level" Everyone Hates
1. Wrong Side Of The Tracks - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
"All you had to do was follow the damn train, C.J.!"
That line of dialogue is tattooed into the brains of everyone who played Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andres, last of the series-defining trio of Playstation 2 GTA titles.
The mission finds protagonist C.J. and his associate "Big Smoke" chasing a train. All you have to do is keep up with the train on your dirt bike while your partner shoots your enemies. Easy on paper; infuriating in implementation.
Like most GTA games of the era, you are constantly battling the game's controls and camera, trusting Big Smoke to shoot off-screen enemies despite his horrendous accuracy. The enemies themselves have a ton of health and can even recover if not shot off the train completely.
This was also before we had analog triggers. In the PS2 days your car had two speeds: go and not go, making it impossible to match the train's speed. Add in that the mission automatically fails at an arbitrary point and that you have to do the whole thing over again - cutscenes included - and you have all the makings of a smashed controller.
And let's not forget that mocking quote, yelled at you by Smoke every single time you fail.
