10 Video Games With Incredible Stories But Terrible Gameplay
3. Planescape: Torment
Planescape: Torment is in many respects the poster child of "great story, trash gameplay."
Black Isle Studios' legendary RPG is renowned for its extremely intricate, well-written story courtesy of the brilliant Chris Avellone, whereby practically every named character you encounter in the world is worth talking to.
The ambition and detail of its narrative is totally unmatched by its thoroughly staid gameplay, then, where combat is trivial to the point of tedium, and the only gameplay aspect that fully engages is the actual dialogue itself (which, it can be argued, scarcely passes for gameplay in the traditional sense).
Even at the time of its 1999 release, Planescape: Torment's gameplay was considered half-baked at best, yet propped up by a story that remains one of the most expertly crafted in the history of the medium.
Though 2017's enhanced version made the eyesore of a UI more appealing to look at, the gameplay was left largely unchanged, drawing only further attention to how horribly dated it is. Again, though, killer storytelling.
