10 Video Games With Incredible Stories But Terrible Gameplay
2. The Last Guardian
The Last Guardian was finally, finally released in 2016 after countless agonising delays, and though in many respects it's a beautiful game with a tender, minimalist story about the bond between a boy and his gigantic, bird-like companion, the gameplay sure is like pulling teeth.
Even those who harbour a real love for the game will freely admit that the gameplay is clunky at best. In attempting to make the focal creature, Trico, behave like a "realistic" animal, his AI routines are infuriatingly unpredictable for anyone trying to, you know, beat the game.
If you've played the game, you'll likely remember struggling to direct Trico to do what you need him to in order to complete a puzzle. This often results in seemingly simple sequences taking far longer than they should to complete.
It's like wading through treacle at the worst of times - you go nowhere fast, and it's all because the game's "fluid" AI is fundamentally busted.
Though the developers deserve praise for the game's richly crafted world and wonderful low-key narrative, the frustrating, undercooked gameplay is a major step down from predecessor Shadow of the Colossus.
