The first time that the world of Grand Theft Auto ventured into 3D gaming was a big risk in a lot of ways but a resounding success by any other metric. It kept the charm and the unapologetic violence of its top-down predecessors and through it into the sandbox style world to the tune of more than ten million copies.

Taking place in Liberty City and putting the player in the shoes of "Claude", there were the familiar pieces to the puzzle here : - getting wasted or busted and going on rampages : - but now with the fully rendered 3D models and cut scenes that look very dated to modern eyes but were the pinnacle of what was possible at the time.

As always it featured a stellar soundtrack and a strong voice-acting cast with missions that were varied, fun and enjoyable. For some reason, barely more than a quarter of those who picked up the game made it through the final mission "The Exchange" and saw what could be considered the ending.

This was of course followed by the equally sucessful Vice City and the series has only conitnued to improve from there.
