10 Video Games With The Most Epic Boss Line-Ups Of All Time

7. Batman: Arkham City

On the one hand, you could say that the Arkham series kind of cheats on the boss front, because it plucks its roster from some of the best superhero source material around. But that would be a little harsh, because it's no easy task to bring Batman's super-villains to life in a way that does them justice.

The Arkham games realise the Batman universe brilliantly, and Arkham City pits you in eclectic battles against the likes of the Mad Hatter, Solomon Grundy, Clayface and Ra's Al Ghul. Each battle forces you to use a range of the combat skills you learn throughout the game, and mercifully there is no 'Titan Joker' this time round.

Highlights include the Mr Freeze fight, where you evade his ice rays while working out a way to outwit and sneak-attack him, a surprise fight against the ball-and-chain-wielding Solomon Grundy, a drug-induced fight with Ra's Al Ghul, and the final showdown with Clayface.

Every boss fight in this game perfectly captures the character of its respective villain, to the extent that even if you do come across a fight that isn't quite perfect (like the surreal Mad Hatter fight), you still come away satisfied.
