The Mega Man series was a huge moment for video game bosses, who are among the first games to actually have some character. The Robot Masters of the original NES Mega Man series set a precedent for imaginative, wacky villains who give us tingles of excitement each time we face them.

But Mega Man X took things to the next level, and by way of its timeless 16-bit graphics and excellent design, has a boss roster that's still a joy to return to today. The intro boss, Vile, kicks things off perfectly, getting you used to the eclectic attacks and attack patterns of your foes.

Each boss, until the final stages, is some robotic variant of an animal, and their attacks would be appropriately themed. Each is a great fight, but stand-outs are Sting Chameleon, whose uses his tongue to attack from the walls and ceilings, makes him an unpredictable and riveting battle, and Sigma, the final boss who you start off fighting in a speedy duel but for the second stage turns into a massive, multi-faceted robot, making for a great set-piece finale.

These fights were more than just gimmicks. They were tough, and you can trace the great patterned-yet-unpredictable bosses of the Souls series back to here.
