When Sony announced that a profoundly silly car-football game was launching day one for "free" on their PlayStation Plus subscription service, it seemed rude not to at least give it a try, right?

But when Rocket League released in July 2015, nobody could've anticipated that it would have the staying power to still be relevant almost an entire decade later.

After developer Psyonix's previous car-football game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, flopped at retail due to a lack of marketing, the developer was desperate to get more eyes on their follow-up.

And partnering with Sony to release it on PS+ was the smartest business move they could've made - something they themselves admit - instantly opening it up to a playerbase of tens of millions on PS4.

Rocket League wasn't just another wannabe eSports game that came and went, though: its fluid, ferociously addictive multiplayer gameplay allowed it to sustain mindshare and a community as the months and eventually years passed.

Psyonix continued to provide steady updates to the game while also launching it on other platforms, including a snug portable version on Nintendo Switch, until the company was acquired by Epic Games in 2019.

That's one hell of a result for a small indie sports game which, if the winds blew differently, could've quickly come and gone without much fanfare.
