6. Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons arrived in totally unassuming fashion in 2013 as a digital-only indie which didn't initially catch much attention. That is, until reviews came out.

After all, Starbreeze Studios had a few quality titles to their name at the time - two The Chronicles of Riddick games and The Darkness - but their 2012 reboot of the Syndicate franchise largely fell upon deaf ears.

Yet Brothers - an adventure game in which players control a pair of siblings with one thumbstick each - received euphoric reviews out of the gate for its creative control scheme and unexpectedly impactful narrative.

At a time when digital-only games were far from the ubiquitous entity they are today, IGN even called it "[possibly] the best downloadable title since Journey."

Brothers then went on to win the Best Game Innovation Award at the 2014 BAFTA Video Game Awards, and its success made director Josef Fares a marquee name in the industry, leading to development of the similarly themed A Way Out and Game of the Year-winning It Takes Two.
