10 Video Games You Bought CONSOLES To Play
7. Pokemon Red & Blue (Game Boy Colour)
The Pokemon phenomenon has been going for nearly twenty five years now and it all started back in 1996 with the release of Red and Blue for the Game Boy Colour. Developed by Game Freak, few could have predicted how massive the game would be.
It was a formula that struck gold at first base, tapping right into the endlessly addicting gameplay loop of collecting and upgrading better Pokemon that still stands strong today. Everyone had their favourites and thanks to the built-in multiplayer functionality, playgrounds and parks everywhere played host to constant verses battles and trading for many years to come.
Arriving late to the handheld and labelled by some as Nintendo's secret weapon, Pokemon exploded in popularity at the time, becoming the platform's best-selling RPG and even beating out Final Fantasy VII in Japan in the same year. The Game Boy Colour had already proven very successful, but when Pokemon arrived, it sent sales figures to the stratosphere as gamers everywhere wanted their own slice of the action.
The rest, as we all know is history. With the franchise having reached its eighth generation of pocket monsters, it shows no sign of slowing down. It wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as it is without the original entries.
