6. Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)
The Final Fantasy franchise had been a permanent fixture on Nintendo hardware for years, its classic sprites and deep systems leading the way for the genre through much of the eighties and early nineties. When it came to number seven however, Square Enix's ambitions would take them in a different direction.
To the surprise of many, the seventh entry in the popular series would leave behind both cartridges and the classic Nintendo sprites in favour of the CD-based PlayStation. This shift in platform would turn into a major boon for Sony's original console. For its 1997 release in Japan, it was already a huge hit with two million copies being sold in the first three days.
Releasing eight in the US to immense critical acclaim, Final Fantasy was drastically different from all of its predeseccors, ditching its medieval routes in favour of something more contemporary. It's gone on to become the most popular release in the series, so much so that the title would be remade in 2020.
FF7 would provide a massive boost to the PlayStation's install base, extending its lead from ten million to sixteen million units. The mainline series would remain a key exclusive under the brand until the release of Final Fantasy XIII in 2010.
