The Metal Gear Solid series has always been an interesting subject for pacifist run enthusiasts and it's possible to complete most of the games without killing any regular enemies, but you do usually have to take out the bosses with lethal means. Metal Gear Solid 4 is actually the only title in the franchise to offer a genuine 100% no-kill playthrough.

Even the boss characters in the game can all be beaten with non-lethal means and the developers included subtly different death scenes for each of them, should the player choose to go down the non-violent route. Snake can use his close quarters combat techniques, as well as tranquilliser rounds and the V-Ring shotgun ammo to deal with enemies without killing them.

If you do manage to make it all the way through the game and the various boss encounters using non-lethal methods, you'll be rewarded with a bunch of unlockable items, including Snake's famous infinite ammo bandana.
