3. Final Fantasy/Secret Of Mana

With the obvious exception of the name, the link between Final Fantasy Adventure and Square's flagship franchise is flimsy at best. Developed as a side-game, or gaiden, to the main branch of the series, the Game Boy action RPG shares more in common with Link's Awakening - besides its superlative quality.

The game's misleading appellation, contrived in a naked attempt to shift more copies, shrouds the fact that Final Fantasy Adventure actually gave way to another popular Square franchise: the Mana series. The action elements from Seiken Dentetsu, as it was called in Japan, were carried over for its better-known SNES sequel, Secret of Mana - a game remade and re-released on PS4 earlier this year as a consequence of misplaced nostalgia.

Curiously, Final Fantasy Adventure was the first and only Final Fantasy game released in Europe until Square decided FFVII was simply too good not to share. No wonder it didn't catch on.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
