10 Video Games You Didn't Realise Shut Down In 2024
7. Friday the 13th: The Game
Friday the 13th: The Game may not have been a critical smash hit, but in addition to ushering in an era of asymmetrical multiplayer games based on hit horror movies, it won itself a loyal legion of fans, many of whom continued to play it for many years after its 2017 launch.
The game hit something of a speed bump when, due to a legal dispute with franchise creator Victor Miller, its official servers were taken offline in 2020, though players could still play together through peer-to-peer matchmaking.
However, on December 31st of last year, all online services were fully discontinued as a result of the publisher's license for the IP expiring, leaving Friday the 13th playable only offline - which, as most will appreciate, isn't really much of an experience.
As if online-centric games having a limited lifespan isn't bad enough, tossing in licensing agreements just makes their closure that much more inevitable.
