10 Video Games You Didn't Realise Shut Down In 2024
3. Rocket Arena
Rocket Arena was a third-person multiplayer shooter that launched in July 2020, and while its recent shutting down was hardly a surprise, it's fair to say that all but the most die-hard fans had long since forgotten its existence altogether.
After all, the game peaked with barely 1,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch and fell off fast, prompting EA to give it an 80% price drop and include it on their EA Play subscription service just two weeks after release.
However, within two months Rocket Arena had sunk below 100 concurrent players and never recovered, yet unexpectedly, the game maintained a faint heartbeat until last year when it was finally put out to pasture.
In late 2023, EA announced that the online-only game would be closing on March 21, 2024 - a frankly shocking shelf life for a game that couldn't crack more than 50 concurrent players for more than three years prior.
As for why Rocket Arena failed? There are so many possibilities here - its lack of a unique hook, the decision to shift from first-person to third-person perspective during development, and an offputting $30 price tag at launch.
