10 Video Games You Didn't Realise Were Cancelled In 2023

9. Immortals Fenyx Rising 2

Cancelled Marvel Midnight Suns
Ubisoft

Immortals Fenyx Rising was a surprisingly entertaining action-adventure game from Ubisoft which, while beholden to the publisher's formulaic open-world formula, was nevertheless a charming, visually stunning, mechanically tight piece of work.

Sure, it was a shameless clone of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but if you're gonna "borrow," why not borrow from the best?

Ubisoft praised the game's sales during its first six months, enough to greenlight a sequel behind-the-scenes, news of which only became public earlier this year when its cancellation was also revealed.

Video Games Chronicle reported that Immortals Fenyx Rising 2 was in early development at Ubisoft Quebec, and was said to shift away from Greek mythology to focus on Hawaiian Polynesian culture.

But the publisher ultimately chose to cancel the game in July due to concerns about establishing it as a tentpole IP - likely business-speak for the first game's drastically lower sales than Ubisoft's current flagship franchises such as Assassin's Creed.

Hopefully Ubisoft Quebec lands on their feet with an intriguing new project soon, because Immortals Fenyx Rising proved they've got the chops for a seriously epic and engaging adventure game.
